Unit One:  The Human Condition – In Search of Self
Bridge to
Unit Two:  The Social Experience – Beyond Personal Goals
Module Three:  Hamlet

For our study of Hamlet, you will require the following:

  • Play Text:  The Global Shakespeare Series Hamlet with Related Readings (International Thomson Publishing, 1997)
  • Movie:  Hamlet – 1996, director: Kenneth Branagh
  • Movie:  The Lion King – Walt Disney Pictures

You will read parts of the play, and view all of it.  For Acts One and Two, you should decide what works best for you; some students find it best to view the play first, while others want to read first.  Others still find it best to watch a bit and read a bit, perhaps breaking it into scenes or acts.  Do what you need to do to best help you understand the play.  In Act Three, you will follow a Before, During, and After plan for viewing the play.

Take advantage of the wealth of information available on the internet – just be sure to check a number of sources and use reliable sources!  Of course, always remember that your teacher is here to help!

A really good site to supplement your study of Hamlet is http://www.clicknotes.com/hamlet/Sceneidx.html.  Another excellent site is http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet/context.html.

As always, it is important to follow the activities in a lock step fashion, as the course is process based.

Happy Hamlet!
