Multicultural Club
Our purpose is to increase cultural awareness at Carlton and to provide support for students from different countries and various cultural backgrounds by helping them feel welcomed, recognized and immersed in student/school life.
We come together and discuss culture in weekly meetings. Students from different backgrounds are present and openly ask and answer each other’s questions. We find out about different countries and try to promote awareness in the school. For example, our first country was Japan. We put up posters, had our Japanese students translate other students’ names, and held a "Japanese word-find" contest.
In addition, we have a lot of activities, sometimes for fund raising and sometimes just to have fun with each other. Several of our club members are also EAL (English as an Additional Language) volunteers. They partner up with one or more ESL students to essentially be a "buddy". They help them with the language as well as include them in social activities. Our volunteers often have group activities with ESL students, such as going bowling, out to dinner, winter ski trips and so on. Mainly, we learn a lot and laugh a lot and make our time at Carlton richer!
